BUILT ON PLEW — PATENTED · ~100 SKILL ATOMS · 40,000 STUDENTS IN KOREA

Writing Course teaches writing the way mathematics is taught.

As a sequence of skills, each learned, practised and tested before the next. The curriculum covers roughly one hundred skill atoms, from the construction of a single clear sentence, through paragraphs, evidence and argument, to the full university essay — including the things schools rarely teach directly: how to reference, how to build an argument that survives objection, how to control tone and style.

The method — patented

PLEW, and where it came from

PLEW began as a marking habit. Grading thousands of essays at the college, the same question kept deciding the grade: what is each sentence for? The method formalises that question — every sentence split into its Purpose, its Logic, its Evidence and its Weakness, with a simplification method that makes fast reading accurate rather than approximate. It extends the Toulmin model of argument, and it is patented.

2018 →

JSB College opens. Every essay marked by hand; the marking patterns that become PLEW start accumulating.

2019

PLEW formalised and the patent filed. The method becomes the spine of the college's reading and writing teaching.

TODAY

PLEW runs the Exam Question Engine, the UK writing curriculum, and the Korean edition used by 40,000 students through partner academies.

TIMED WRITING UNDER EXAM CONDITIONS — JSB COLLEGE, GANGNAM [YEAR]

A student trained on PLEW writes the way an examiner reads: knowing what every sentence is for — and what it would be attacked for.

The rubric — as produced

The writing rubric

The writing dimension of the diagnostic rubric, exactly as it is used: the Stage 0–7 spine read two ways — the curriculum walks up it, the diagnostic finds where each operation caps.

Stage 0 is a sentence that holds together; Stage 7 is an argued essay with its sources in order. Each rung names one operation, and the diagnostic finds the first rung a student cannot hold — which is where their teaching starts.

How the teaching works

Each skill is small enough to learn in one sitting and is practised immediately, in context — the same skill returning in different passages, subjects and registers until it holds. The practice materials draw on ten years of real student writing collected through JSB College and our Examrizz admissions community, so the errors a student is shown are the errors students actually make, and the model answers are what real improvement looks like. At the end of the curriculum a student produces finished work — complete essays, argued and referenced — and can see the distance travelled from their first sentence diagnostics.

Korea — 한국판

Matched to the national examinations. It begins from grammar fundamentals and builds through the same atomic skills toward 서술형 and 영작 — the written-response items where marks are won and lost — with continuous practice against real examination formats. It is the first writing app for students in Korea.
